Chapter 16: Hayden

I sat in the dining room across from Victoria. We were waiting for Zander to come down.

Surprisingly, she didn’t seem all that angry with me. The fork probably didn’t hurt much, but still. I did stab her.

I cleared my throat, trying to make the situation less awkward. “Sorry about the fork.”

She shook her head. “No, you’re not. That’s alright. I wouldn’t be sorry either.”

I raised an eyebrow, taken back at her calm words. “Really?”

“Yes. When I first came to live here, I did far worse. An entire wing of the house needed to be rebuilt because of a fire I started.”

“What do you mean?”

She smiled. “I was once you. Malcolm wasn’t my fated mate. He chose me, and he took me from my pack. He brought me here to live with him, and he became my everything. I didn’t want him at first. Just like you don’t want Zander. I learned to love him, and he’s given me a far better life than I ever would have had if I stayed with my pack.”

Stockholm syndrome. It made complete sense. She was a victim of his family’s craziness too. Only now she was a willing participant.

I sat forward and glared at her. “I will never learn to love your son. The only reason I’m doing this is for my sister.”

A slow smile spread across Victoria’s lips. “I said the same thing when I was sitting in your seat. Insisted I would never love a monster like Malcolm. I do hope that I’m still alive to witness you sitting in my seat one day.”

I resisted the urge to tell her just how crazy she’d become, but Zander walked in. His neck was already healed and he’d changed his clothes.

He looked at me seriously. “If you ever attack my mother again, you won’t be answering to me. You’ll be answering to my father.”

Victoria stood up. “It’s fine, darling. Why don’t you sit down and hear what Hayden has to say?”

Zander nodded, kissing his mother’s cheek as she passed by him. “I’ll give the two of you some privacy.”

Victoria walked out and Zander sat down in her seat. “Well? What is this about?”

I gulped, trying to muster the voice to say words I didn’t want to say. “Fine.”

Zander raised an eyebrow. “Fine, what?”

“I’ll be your mate.”

He grinned. “That’s a major turnaround, Hayden.”

“Well, a lot has changed in the last hour.”

“Getting that sick of the barn?”

“More like getting sick of watching someone I love get abused because of me.”

He pursed his lips. “I’d say I’m sorry that my sister had to use the shock monitor on Hope, but she did try to kill me.”

“Can you blame her?”

He tilted his head. “No. Perhaps not.”

“Anyway, you’re getting what you want. I’ll be your mate.”

“Just like that?”

“No. I have a condition.”

He nodded. “Yes. I figured you would. You’re a strong-minded woman. I like that about you. I don’t want some mouse as my mate. I want a force to be reckoned with. What is your condition?”

“I want my sister gone.
